Hydroxyurea acts by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, which is essential for the synthesis of deoxyribonucleotides required for DNA production. By blocking DNA synthesis, the drug interferes with the cell cycle and suppresses the proliferation of rapidly dividing cells, including malignant tumor cells and abnormal hematopoietic cells.
